Websense Filtering on BlackBerry

Blackberry LogoWe use Websense to filter Internet traffic here at work. We also maintain a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. It was recently brought to our attention that some people that were allowed to access Facebook or Twitter could do this on their desktops, but could not access the sites on their BlackBerry’s.

The reason for that is the BlackBerry’s communicate with the BES server for Internet sites. If the BES server is unable to access a website then the BlackBerry handheld will be stopped as well.

The simple solution to this was to add the IP address of our BES server to the policy that allows Facebook and Twitter on Websense. Once we did this the users were able to access these sites on their BlackBerry’s.
